TEACHING & LEARNING

One of the key strengths of our academic programme is that we are able to offer a seamless pathway for teaching and learning from Year 7 through to Year 13.

Junior School

In our Junior School, which includes Years 7 through 10, we're dedicated to building a strong foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics. We closely track each student's progress to ensure they're developing these essential skills. This information is shared with both students and parents, reflecting our commitment to a strong educational partnership.

From Years 7 to 9, students learn in homerooms and follow our integrated curriculum, Foundation Studies (FNS). This program uses a variety of engaging contexts to provide a well-rounded and enriching education.

Foundation Studies (FNS)

Our Foundation Studies program for Years 7, 8, and 9 combines Religious Studies, English, Social Studies, and elements of Physical Education and Health.

This integrated approach allows us to teach important values and key competencies, while also developing students' critical and creative thinking. We focus on metacognition—the ability to understand one's own thought processes—and other essential skills that help students "learn how to learn." With a strong emphasis on literacy, Foundation Studies provides a solid base for the specialized subjects students will take in Year 10 and beyond.

Since Foundation Studies teachers are responsible for a significant portion of a student's learning, they are uniquely positioned to understand and address their individual pastoral and educational needs.

Junior Projects

To help students prepare for Year 10 and Senior School, Foundation Studies students also work on projects that let them explore option subjects like Science, Mathematics, and Physical Education. This helps them get used to a more integrated timetable, which prepares them for the full, multi-subject schedule they will have in Senior School.

Senior School

In our Senior School, Years 11 to 13, we focus on helping students connect with their future career paths after they leave high school. We use the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) to assess their progress, guiding them to choose subjects that align with their interests, skills, and goals.

Our pathway programs offer a variety of opportunities, including:

  • University studies

  • Trades academies

  • Gateway programs that provide valuable work experience

For our Year 13 students, we offer Scholarship programs to challenge and extend those who want to achieve at a higher level. We also provide opportunities for senior students to take university-level courses during their final two years at the College.

Learning Support

Our Learning Support Department helps develop an educational pathway for students who need assistance with their learning, providing special wrap-around support in purpose-built, modern facilities. Wherever appropriate, students are placed in mainstream classes. As required students are brought into the learning centre for specialist teaching. A wide range of learning disabilities are catered for, and individual programmes of learning developed.

Learning needs are not the only focus for the centre, but it is also a place for students to come to for pastoral and wellbeing support.
