The St Peter’s College robotics team, SPC Bots, enables students from all year levels to participate in a number of robotics competitions. The college has 5 VEX IQ robots for the competition teams (for students up to year 9) and 9 robots for the year 7/8 robotics project classes. The metal robots are used for the VEX competition by students from year 9 to 13, while senior students use their robots for their NCEA assessments as well. Students develop skills to help them design, build, program and compete with their robots. They also have the opportunity to enter online challenges to enhance their learning experiences in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas. These challenges range from essay and photo competitions to designing team websites, game animations and promotional videos. SPC Bots is one of the leading teams in the Central Region, which organised the first National Championships for VEX IQ robots, and students have been to bootcamps, scrimmages and championship events in the region as well as New Plymouth, Wellington and Auckland. The team has won Excellence, Judges and Driving Skills Awards, while also being a finalist in the World Game Animation Challenge.
