Service Committee

The Service Committee serves the school by organising events that raise awareness and finances in order to improve the quality of life for people in need.

During 2009 we have organised and been a part of the following events and promotions...

RELAY FOR LIFE – 7/8 March
The Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is over and completed for another year.     Thirty of St Peter’s most committed and/or daring 6th/ 7th form students took on the challenge of a 24 hour relay with great enthusiasm! – Wonderfully supported by the year 7-11’s who came down providing fresh legs and enthusiasm.

We had a great time - although the weather didn’t hold out for us, we battled     rain, wind and a flying gazebo! Of the 108 teams competing St Peter’s College (SPC) came 3rd in highest total number of laps completed and raised around $3600 to go towards the Cancer Society and their goals for the future. We were lucky enough to have support throughout the relay from numerous staff members and past pupils. Thanks heaps to all those who came down and ran!

NEW ZEALAND SIGN LANGUAGE WEEK                                                                - We created a display in the library with books and DVD’s informing students on New Zealand Sign Language and also on American Sign Language (which is a great comparison in understanding that Sign Language throughout the world is just as unique as languages spoken).

- On the last day of the week (Friday the 8th May) we ran a basic Sign Language course – enabling students to learn to say their name, greet people (hello, nice to meet you, how are you?), count and understand the commonplace courtesies required when signing to someone – i.e. eye contact, facing the person.

- Each of these activities helped to promote awareness of the deaf community and New Zealand Sign Language.

ASPERGERS MUFTI DAY                                                                                          - Friday 15th May was Aspergers Mufti Day. To help raise awareness of people with Aspergers, we put posters around the school and talked about the resent video produced here at St Peter’s.

- Some members of staff and students with Aspergers talked to the school about their lives and what Asperger’s means to them day to day
